THEY SEE ME ROLLING, BUT NOT COMING...
Just like we've seen in various Science fiction American movies, a new pandemic has ridden the world by storm, and body counts are piling by the foot traces it leaves behind as Scientists and Health care workers risk their lives as they race against time to track it down, as the survival of humanity depends on it. Although, if we are honest with ourselves, we should have seen it coming, but what is our takeaway from this disaster really?
"The dictators of the world say if you tell a lie often enough, why, people will believe it. Well, if you tell the truth often enough, they will believe it and go along with you"...Harry Truman (1884 - 1972) 33rd President of The United States from 1945 to 1953 succeeding upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt after serving as Vice President.
BLAME GAME: PASSING THE BUCK...
The bigger picture calls for wisdom and initiative to tackle the situation first, before all other things especially conspiracy theories take the center stage of our reasoning.
"With death itself in the streets, I did turneth hence from the brotherhood of man and seeketh deliverance in distraction"...Stewart Stafford (American actor born to Irish parents in New York)
HISTORICAL BREAKOUTS
Three of the deadliest pandemics in recorded history were caused by a single bacterium "Yersinia Pestis" a fatal infection known as 'the plague'.
Plague ridden fleas attached to stowaway rats on a ship from Egypt over the Mediterranean sea in the year 541CE.
The Plague never really went away, its survivors just had immunity. It returned 800 years later and performed a ruthless massacre. When it hit Europe in 1347, it killed over 200 million people in four years. This was when isolation/quarantine was invented; people that arrived were isolated for 30 days to be sure they weren't sick.
London never rested from dealing with diseases as the plague resurfaced roughly every 20 years from 1348 to 1665, 40 outbreaks in 300 years. In 1500 England made a law to isolate the sick, their homes were marked, and those with infected families had to carry a white pole in public. Cats and dogs were thought to spread the disease so they were killed in hundreds of thousands.
Small pox was endemic to Europe, Asia and Arabia for centuries and killed 3 out of ten people, and the survivors were left with pockmarked scars. The indigenous people of modern day Mexico and the United States had zero immunity and so were cut down by tens of million. Centuries later, small pox became the first viral epidemic to be ended by a vaccine.
In the early mid nineteenth century, cholera tore right through England killing tens of thousands, a British Doctor by name John Snow suspected the spread was lurking in their drinking water. Doctor Snow helped improve water sanitation, which led to a decline in the disease.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”…2Timothy 1:7 (The Holy Bible)
LESSON LEARNED
In as much as we should be more vigilant, we also must be careful of rumours, fake news and ridiculous conspiracy theories. Yes social media has played a vital role in making us quickly aware of the goings on; we must understand how the media works.
Bad news gives the media more traffic and traction, and by implication more money, unfortunately it has a huge downside, which is its casting of fear upon the people, and eventually panic reigns. And when a huge population panics, the result is worse than a war. This invisible monster has forced us to stay united by staying apart as a social distancing strategy, but the media would have more credibility if they let the people realize that most people recover from the virus.
