"I have come to accept the feeling of not knowing where I am going. And I have trained myself to love it. Because it is only when we are suspended in mid-air with no landing in sight, that we force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight. And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to. But the miracle is the unfolding of the wings.
You may not know where you’re going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you”...C. JoyBell C : Author, Poet and Thinker.
How valuable is hope?
It couldn’t be a crazier and perhaps even a more confusing time as the corona virus has plagued literally every major part of the world, leaving death, unemployment and sickness in its tracks.
The world has never been more united in fear since the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918 combined with the devastation of the two world wars, and never been more uncertain about the future since the last great depression.
As the world advanced in research, tourism, trade and technology with such accelerated pace and no sign of slowing down through the year 2019, no one saw a major standstill coming our way in the year 2020, a screeching halt that was going to shut the whole world down, forcing planet earth to close for business. However, just as the saying goes, there is always hope so far we live still. What have we to lose, if we hold unto hope?
“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I’m afraid ”…Audre Lorde (1934-1992) American Writer and Feminist.
It has also not surprisingly been a season of rumours and science fiction-like conspiracy theories tied to the pandemic, that even Hollywood could make a mega blockbuster hit, leading us to second guess our instincts, logic and bewildered as random people are quickly picked but slowly pass away after being afflicted by the unseen but present enemy virus.
We are at an unusual war where doctors, nurses and other health care workers are at the battlefields.
Those workers that we have always overlooked are the ones representing us at the front lines, trying their best to save lives while they themselves stare death in the very face, though acknowledging fear, but daring the present danger. We salute the unsung heroes, health workers, Grocery workers, Cleaners, Logistics handlers, Security, IT guys etc who’s past efforts have come to bare to shine brightly like the world cup, their worth for the world to behold, while the rest of us stay in the comfort of our homes to curb the further spread of the apparently mystery virus.
“Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved”…Martin Luther (1483-1546) German Theologian and religious reformer who was the catalyst of the 16th century Protestant reformation.
Loyalty in Unusual Times
Different representatives of governments of various countries around the world have scrambled in every available direction using tailor made strategies to curtail the spread of the virus.
Developed economies that understand the implication of the pandemic upon the economy and the health of the citizens have been proactive enough to bail out companies and deploy stimulus packages to their people.
Unfortunately however, in other climes, especially third world countries that have a high prevalence of poverty, illiteracy, poor justice systems and corruption, there has been a spike in poverty, hunger, robbery and even needless deaths caused by security agents, all of whom due to widespread ignorance don’t realize or fully grasp the essence of the lockdown.
The ravaging pandemic has actually made it clearer that we humans are truly social beings and our happiness and survival are dependent upon each other. It is so beautiful and comforting how governments and wealthy individuals have turned up with funds and resources to help alleviate the suffering of the people.
“Today if anything is trying to hold you back, give no attention to it. Get your hopes up, get up, look up, and get ready to rise up”…Germany Kent (1975 - ) American print and broadcast journalist.
Still, We Rise
Hope is an extremely powerful yet massively underrated feeling. Although there is a thin line between a doctor masking the implication of your prognosis and apparently lying to you so that you can feel hopeful in order for you to feel better, but either way, beyond recommending placebos, when the doctor or the nurse assures you of full recovery no matter the grim circumstance you find yourself, that singular ray of hope of survival and regaining of good health is usually enough for some people to actually get better, our minds are that powerful.
This is why religious fathers remind us of positive texts in the Holy Bible such as “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is good and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:2)”
As we weather the storm, I believe it is important to appreciate the value of every single soul including health care workers, choose to see beyond fear, show unconditional love towards ourselves, and hope to rise again.
God bless Nigeria, Africa, and the entire world!
